WHAT IS SUPER ABRASIVE?

HOME > TECHNOLOGY > WHAT IS SUPER ABRASIVE?

  • Super abrasive means abrasive using diamond and CBN.
  • Super abrasive has excellent performance as abrasive because of it high intensity.
  • Diamond and CBN are both super abrasive, but the range of use is different according to materials of workpiece.

  • Vitrified bond

Vitrified bond is ceramic binder made by mixing clay and abrasive grain, and it is baked under the high temperature. It has consistent structure, so it is appropriate for various grinding. Especially, it has outstanding machinability and wear resistance, so it has excellence performance in grinding difficult to cut materials.

It uses binder after firing vitrified inorganic substances, so it is excellent to combine, protect and maintain abrasive grains. Especially, it forms numerous gas pockets between abrasive grains, so it is also excellent to release chip preventing clogging of abrasive grains. As a result, workpieces are minimally damaged by grinding heat enhancing the quality, and dressing is less performed increasing life cycle of the wheel. Also, it is easy to keep and used broadly to grind precision products.

    Vitrified diamond wheel

Though many cases, SYD vitrified wheel is proved to polish workpiece even in lower speed and under high pressure with excellent performance. SYD vitrified diamond wheel is artificial diamond abrasive grain mainly used to polish non-heat treated products like steel.

SYD super vitrified diamond & CBN wheel is created by SYD’s own technology. SYD introduces super vitrified wheel to satisfy customers all over the world.

    Vitrified CBN wheel

CBN is abbreviation of Cubic Boron Nitride, and it has high hardness, fracture resistance, heat stability and excellent wear resistance. SYD vitrified CBN wheel is cubic boron nitride abrasive grain mainly used for polishing nonferrous metal and heat treated products. Diamond has the highest hardness but also has heat conduction quality, so it begins to oxidize over 600℃. Also, diamond made of carbon is severely worn by reacting with iron because of a high affinity with iron.

CBN has heat stability even up to 1370℃ and low grinding heat having little impact on workpiece. SYD vitrified CBN wheel based on such features has especially excellent wear resistance and heat resistance performing well in polishing difficult to cut materials including steel. Also, it has high removal rate of grinding to maintain stable precision for continuous working.

    Abrasive Grain of wheel

Abrasive grain of wheel means the type of abrasive used for wheel, and wheel using artificial diamond and CBN is produced in SYD.

    Name Producing Method Features Usage
    Artificial Diamond Artificial synthesis

    • Exist in nature
    • The highest hardness

    CBN
    (CUBIC BORON NITRIDE)
    Artificial synthesis
    • Similar structure with diamond
    • Not exist in nature
    • The second highest hardness following diamond
Carbon steel, chrome steel, high speed steel, tool steel, structural steel, bearing steel, cast iron, sintered alloy, magnetic alloy, stainless, heat-resisting super alloy, etc.

    Grit size of Wheel

Grit size is the number to show the size of abrasive grain used for wheel. (Wheel of grit size 200/230 means the wheel made with diamond/CBN grains of #200/230) Appropriate grit size for usage of wheel (polishing, lapping, grinding) and workpiece should be used, and it is marked with mesh and ㎛ according to classifying method of grain.

    Concentration of Wheel

It is the number to express the rate taken by abrasive grain in grinding layer of wheel. The more abrasive grain there is, the higher number is used, and the less abrasive grain there is, the lower number is used. In case of small amount of abrasive grain, it is said that concentration is low. Usually, high concentration means high association and longer life cycle.

    Grade of Wheel

Grade means the degree of ability to protect and maintain of binder which protects and maintains abrasive grain not the hardness of abrasive grain itself. In case of wheel using binders with the same hardness, the larger the amount of binder is, the greater the grade becomes, and the smaller the amount is, the lower the grade becomes. Appropriate grade should be selected according to workpiece and working conditions, and usually if grade is low, grindability of wheel is increased, and if grade is high, grinding layer is worn less, but grindability is decreased, and heat is generated when grinding workpiece.
